MPs cautious on modern gambling laws 4/8/2004 (www.dehavilland.co.uk) A cross-party parliamentary committee yesterday scaled down plans by culture secretary Tessa Jowell to usher in freewheeling Las Vegas-style gambling at British seaside resorts. The joint committee scrutinising the draft Gambling Bill listed 139 changes and warned against a laissez-faire approach to gambling, recommending important checks and balances to protect the vulnerable. The committee proposed casinos with more than 40 gaming tables should not be at liberty to install an unlimited numbers of slot machines. MPs said: "We do not believe that it is acceptable or logical that casinos, once they reach a certain size, should be entitled to have as many high value slot machines as they want." The committee said class D fruit machines - those offering jackpots of £5 or less - should be removed from fish and chip shops, cafes and the like. Full Story
